I never saw a Paddington movie for Paddington, Peru earlier this year. I had heard a lot of praise for the massive weight of the talent of the second film from both critics and Pedro Pascal, and after being totally fascinated by director Paul King’s Wonka, I was thrilled to check them out. Thankfully, it’s an absolutely hype-bearing film and I revisited it thanks to the new Paddington 2 4K release from Warner Bros.
“Paddington is happy to settle with the Brown family at Windsor Gardens, becoming a popular member of the community, spreading Joy and Marmalade everywhere. While searching for the perfect gift for Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington will be appearing to find a unique pop-up book at his antique shop and head out to the appearance of Paddington. The Browns must mask the thief,” the summary says.
I was fascinated by the original Paddington, and the sequel is based on a victory formula with more heart and humor. What makes the film so special is the incredible performance of Hugh Grant, who plays the villain Phoenix Buchanan, and his incredible role in the outstanding prison sequence from the great Brendan Gleeson. Of course, Ben Whishaw and the Visual Effects team do an incredible job of bringing Paddington to life. He is simply one of the most likable characters to adorn the silver screen (and if you disagree, you’ll be stared at me).
There is a lot of love in this film. This looks good in 4K in HDR, as it uses the same transfer as Studiocanal’s collection in the UK, but one aspect that has really come to praise is the sense of community. King does an incredible job of bringing back the characters from the first film in a small way, showing that Paddington has become an important part of his neighborhood. When thrown into prison, we see how much the bear is overlooked and how great he is at turning his neighbor into a friend. Like many films, it is very ambitious and if we help each other like bears of good intentions, the world would simply be a better place.
The Paddington 2 4K release features solid bonus content as everything Blu-ray is carried over. This includes a great commentary track by King. King has a great story from filming, revealing his collaboration with bringing Paddington to life in the film. There are also seven videos, from an educational video that teaches you how to make a marmalade sandwich (I can’t wait to try that recipe) highlighting the performances of Grant and Gleason in the film.
Paddington 2 4K Review: Final Verdict
The Paddington 4K release is a simple recommendation as it is one of the best family films released in the 21st century. With support from Dolby Vision and HDR10, the colorful film looks great with a very high definition and features all the bonus features of previous releases. There are no downsides to the upgrade. Also, it is certainly the best version of a film owned in the US.
