Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s recent Netflix deal has been protested by fans of streaming platforms, with the recent online petition winning tens of thousands of signatures and asking Netflix to end his relationship with him.
Moveon On On Moveon, an online public advocacy site that allows users to create petitions, has gained massive traction with its petition entitled “Tony Hinchcliffe’s No Netflix Transaction.”
The petition now has over 43,000 digital signatures, announced on Netflix in March, asking Netflix to sign a deal to confirm that Hinchcliffe will produce three comedy specials under his “Kill Tony” brand.
What is the controversy behind Tony Hinchcliffe’s deal?
The reason for the petition comes from the appearance of Hinchcliffe at the Donald Trump rally in October 2024. In Larry, Hinchcliffe is known for having a “go anything” approach to comedy, but has made various jokes for a variety of people, including Jews, Latinos and African Americans.
Hinchcliffe also called Puerto “the floating island of garbage,” and elicited a massive backlash shortly after the rally. Celebrities like Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Lynn Manuel Miranda all made statements against Hinchcliffe and his comments.
“Codian Tony Hinchcliffe, who took the stage at Trump rally and laughed at Puerto Rican, black, Jewish and Palestinian communities, has secured a lucrative Netflix deal for multiple new comedy specials,” read an online petition against Hinchcliffe. “Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico were so marginalized that even the Trump campaign issued a statement that his jokes did not reflect the campaign’s views.
“We’re not going to repeat the awful comments he’s made. Netflix should not give him an additional platform to spit more violence on its 300 million subscribers.”
