Natalie Dormer and Jimmy Simpson spoke to Comingsoon about the incredible story of Audrey’s children starring and the film. Directed by Ami Canaan Mann, the film is now available in theaters starting today.
“Audrey’s children tell the untold true story of Dr. Audrey Evans, a visionary British doctor who exploded into the scene as the first female oncology director at the world-renowned children’s hospital in Philadelphia in 1969. It affected the lives of patients, and ultimately millions of children and families around the world,” the summary says.
Tyler Trese: Natalie, the real Audrey Evans, died while the film was produced. So, what does it mean you’re spreading her incredible true story and that she was a great person? Because this is a truly wonderful celebration of a wonderful life.
Natalie Dormer: It’s really a privilege. In other words, it definitely is. I had met a woman myself, held my hand and told her I was doing my best, so we wanted to do it right by her. In other words, I will never experience that kind of thing in my career again. We never know that she was with us and that she held us and writer producer Julia.
This film doesn’t exist without Julia, who is like Audrey’s honorable goddess. (And) to find out that Audrey was there, hoping it would happen and support Julia!
Jimi and I were given the gift of being part of being taken to the fold. And it’s a very specific and unique project. And I don’t think I’m going to connect (against the role) on a personal level. So, it would be amazing if I did it, but I think the chances of me being able to have such an experience with the protagonist playing again is very rare.
Jimmy, the film ultimately points out that in real life, the two characters are married at 79 and 82 and are early in the morning, so they may still be working on time. I just thought it was the cutest thing. How special was that initial connection and how they met? I love how it actually happened that she’s reading his emails.
Jimi Simpson: Being a part of it was very special. As Natalie said, it was a completely singular experience.
So there’s Julia, an ordinary man who happened to be nearby in this unknown legend. So, in most movies, if you’re going to work on something like this, you’ll usually have a studio. For example, the studio plans to set up this meeting at Children’s Hospital Philadelphia.
However, in this experience, all doorways were opened by her own Julia herself, through her father, by her friends, or through her work (and) at Ronald McDonald House. Because they love her, her family and Audrey’s effects.
So, like Natalie said, I don’t think I’ll be experiencing this completely. It was meant to be magic and the story necessary to tell. And it was spoken with love, like on every level. And, yeah, I think Julia was the only person who could tell this story. And so she was able to literally take us to our family before we said it and as we said it.
Natalie, you can probably work with your cute co-stars, and I’m talking about not Clancy Brown, but about the little rabbits in those scenes. How do you work with the animals in this film? You’re dealing with some. They are all very cute.
Domer:Yeah, I mean, it was just… what do they say? “Don’t work with children or animals.”
But, oh, it was so much fun. I mean, I loved animals. So it really happened. Audrey really took it on scans to show the child that the rabbit would go first. “Look, there’s no harm.
Just as it literally happened. She did that. And she is famous for building this huge aviary. There are all these birds and finches that we refer to at the end of the film. So she was very bold. But for me, working with kids was a very unique and special experience for Jimi, working with them too.
It’s a different kind of acting because they’re just there, and there are a lot of things you know, and the kids get tired and the kids get bored.
And it seems you’re hanging out with the kids, you’re trying to keep their mood up and you’re interacting with them. In other words, Jimi and I were very rarely trapped. It’s not like the other productions you go to, you lock yourself up, you go to your line and learn, you go and list the channels you go and stay with yourself.
In between the take we literally enjoyed having fun with the kids, maintaining energy and wandering around with them. That was also very specific. You don’t get it at normal work either.
Thank you to Natalie Dormer and Jimi Simpson for taking the time to talk about Audrey’s children.
