When she recently appeared on the Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie Podcast (via People), Clarkson opened in 2002 about her infamous American Idol victory, who was the first person to win what became a pop culture staple. According to Clarkson, many in the music industry were less embracing the idea of shows like American Idols.
Clarkson said there was “no one there” when she won, and people in the industry were “really mean.” With a sarcastic twist, Clarkson jokes, and the same people (she wouldn’t name) will later become coaches with some level of vocal ability.
“I had no one there. I was the first winner,” Clarkson said. “It was tough. No matter what it was, it doesn’t sound like it was really tough,” Clarkson said. “People were really mean. People who were really mean were coaches. Do you know what I’m saying?
