The saga of Alex Ross Perry’s Strange Metapaving Film Project continues with the official teaser trailer for the film that was titled Range Life: Pavement Story Starring Joe Keely, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker and Nat Wolf.
Range life Perry’s hybrid biography/music/documentary biopic pavement. Keely stars as frontman Stephen Markmus, tells the band’s decorated story through a self-aware lens, with plenty of jokes “for your consideration.” Distributor Utopia said in a statement: “Joe Keely has already appeared as Stephen Marks, the best actor in the 2026 musical biopic, right after this year’s Oscar ceremony.”
What you know about the movie so far pavementwhich premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, was the portrayal of Keeley and his co-stars as fictional versions of themselves in “behind the scenes” footage. Range lifeand is more obsessed with the career benefits of being in a biopic than in a film subject. The new teaser shows paving songs like “Here” and “Shady Lane/J vs. S” portraying the band on label meetings, interviews and on stage.
The teaser ends with a note saying, “Will I dress this Christmas for success?” We propose a release date for December 25th, but there are no further details at this time.
Last December, producer Robert Green and band co-founder Scott Kannerberg (aka Spiral Stairs) confirmed that for the film’s 2025 release there would be “a new pavement song on the soundtrack,” but Kunberg explained that it was “not a big deal.”
Meanwhile, the 2020s was a time of revitalization of pavement. Beyond the 2022 reunion tour, the band achieved their first gold certification of their careers last year with their 1999 song “Harness Your Hopes.”
Additionally, Malkmus launched a new indie supergroup called The Hard Quartet last year, launching Emmett Kelly, Matt Sweeney and Jim White. Their self-titled debut album will be dropped in October and will feature tour dates in 2025, including shows in Atlanta, Brooklyn, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and more. Get your ticket here.
