Author/Director Mark Anthony Green Opus It starts with a hidden pop star named Moretti (John Malkovich), who invites a selection group of journalists and influencers to his secluded compounds to get the chance to hear his first new album within 30 years. As chaos continues, it’s an opportunity for music fans to die, at least figuratively or even literally.
Ayo Edebiri stars as Ariel, one of the journalists caught up in Moretti’s web, but Malkovich owns the screen as a David Bowie-esque figure. The veteran actor had several new experiences working in the film, including recording three real songs written by Nile Rogers and The Dream, under the guise of Moretti. But one thing that wasn’t new to him: wearing heels.
In fact, as he said, Markovic walked them (literally) result In a zoom interview. “In movies from the era, you wear heels depending on which period. Back in the Greek era, you can have a huge platform. I actually wore platforms in the 70s, but I’m pretty familiar with them. And Mark Anthony had a very distinctive taste and wanted a very distinctive look. I think I understood that.
Opus It was created on a tight budget with a limited number of shooting days. “It seems totally crazy,” says Malkovic. “When I started filming, it only took about four months for regular films. And now it’s like, “Ah, how many scenes? 32. How many days are they filmed? Three. Ah, okay.”
But within that time, first time Mark Anthony Greene was able to pack a lot. Green explanation Opus In result “As a warning story about tribalism, it hopes that we will ask some questions about people we idolatrously, beyond entertainment and art. I think the observations I make are. Opus It’s not special just because of me and my worldview… I love stand-up comedies. The best joke is when a comedian says what you think, but never made it that clear. So we tried to find the most enjoyable way to clarify this point.
Malkovic had no trouble understanding the character and Greene’s perspective. I think a good script will tell you who that person is and how they see the world. ”
Work (A24)
However, Markovic said: Because when you are an actor, it’s difficult for people to understand that you are someone else’s dream figure. It’s not your dream, and you have to get it through your fat head sometimes. That’s their dream. That’s how I always work with the director. ”
Creation key Opus It was Moretti’s music, where Green was able to invite two All-Star producers. The director seems to be in awe of being able to work with Nile Rogers and Dreams. “It’s really hard to put you in something that happened to my little mind,” he says. “My all-focused Venn diagram is John Malkovich, Nile Rogers and Dreams. You’re talking about two of the best producers and songwriters in history. They’re literally in the studio with Beyoncé – I have to pull them away from Beyoncé. We went through such a painstaking process to make it work. I was really demanding that I have a Nile and dream of singing, but they were amazing, amazing partners.”
Green remembers the day he began recording at Malkovich in a Boston studio. “We were waiting for John, and it’s like everyone is their true self. The Nile looks incredible. Dream is watching football and probably making another record. You can say that John comes in and John is going to play. There was a seriousness like a prize fighter. You say, ‘Oh, he’s really here to do this’ and you’re not too afraid. And I saw that they matched his strength, then his strength rose, and the engineer’s strength…”
About half an hour after the session, Greene said, “There was a moment when John threw a note and everyone was staring around, ‘Holy Shit, this is amazing.’ And if the movie didn’t come out, if it was – what I felt in that room that day, I felt it was okay. That day there was such alchemy in that room, and there was such a beautiful feeling. We did something really special. ”
Add green. “I feel spoiled. My next film, the character, is not a singer. So I don’t know what I’m trying to do or how I’m going to recreate that feeling. But at this point I’m obsessed with it.”
Moretti’s first single, “Dina Simone,” is currently available on all streaming platforms. In other words, Malkovich is now officially a Spotify artist. He has no strong opinions on how the company currently pays royalties, but he still enjoyed his time as a rock star.
“I really felt like what they did was in the hands of people who were very capable of doing,” he says. “They know how to make records. It was no doubt about them, and gaining that experience was a truly important event for me in my career. I did all sorts of unlikely things. But it was a truly singular experience and being in the recording studio with them.”
Opus We will arrive at the theatre on Friday, March 14th.
