Corey Feldman says he was originally cast in the role Leonardo DiCaprio played in the 1993 film What you eat Gilbert Grapebut he was fired after Johnny Depp told the producer he didn’t want to work with “Junkie.”
As a guest on the latest episode of Billy Corgan’s new podcast The grand othersFeldman told the Smashing Pumpkins frontman that he landed the role of Ernie Grape before Depp was cast as his older brother Gilbert Grape.
“I’ve never seen a movie because I’m still bitter,” Feldman told Corgan. “The bitter leaves in it. But yes, I was originally cast for the role.”
The actor singer continued, “Johnny Depp was cast after I was and apparently whispered in the producer’s ears and he said he didn’t like me. He said I was a junkie and he didn’t work with junkies.

Feldman, who fought drug addiction in his teens, claimed that he was clean and calm when he acquired the role. “I just got out of rehab,” he recalls. “I was turning my life around, and in fact I was trying to help (the late actor) Kawa (Phoenix) back then.
He speculated that losing parts changed the trajectory of his career. “As you can imagine, there was a bit of a thorn on that side,” Feldman added. “And if I weren’t pushed out and played that role, I know what happened from that point on… there was bitter tea there, but that’s what you don’t stick to them, you’re out in the past.”
DiCaprio was nominated for the best supporting actor for this role and became one of Hollywood’s leading actors. It appears that both DiCaprio and Feldman were not the only roles that were playing the original role. Titanic.
