At this point in the lifespan of the Netflix anthology series Black mirrorI feel that everything is connected. This is less true than season 7. The show’s return not only features the 2017 Emmy-winning USS Callister, the first direct connection of previous articles, but there’s even more obvious connection between season 7 and the past, making it feel like a full season of the sequel.
It goes beyond the cute jokes of the school teachers in “Common People” talking about the artificial bees of season 3 “Hated In the Nation” and the “Hotel Reverie” movie star who lives on Junipero Drive. “Bête Noire” invokes the paranoia of “White Bear” and “Shut Up and Dance” while “Playthings” revives key characters from interactive story experiences BandersNatchNot to mention video game company Tuckersoft. And “Eulogy” feels like a mashup of “Your All History” from Season 1 and “Be Right Back” from Season 2.
Being familiar doesn’t always mean a bad thing, but it’s a concern when it comes to shows where creativity feels like an important part of their appeal. Especially when Black mirror I’m starting to feel it Too much It’s predictable and can even drag the most promising storylines. The opening episode of the season, “Common People,” feels typical Black mirrorbut in all the worst ways. Chris Ododo and Rashida Jones (who previously co-written the season three episodes of “No Dib”) and stars as Amanda are saved only by a miraculous new brain injury treatment called Rivermind after Amanda nearly died.

Meanwhile, “Hotel Reverie” features Issaray as a modern actor who provided the opportunity to star in a remake of an old Hollywood film via an immersive digital simulation of her co-stars’ original 1940s cast.
Directed by Haolu Wang and starring Awkwafina and Harriet Walter, “Hotel Reverie,” is the second-longest episode in 77 minutes, in a way that feels at least a bit overly padded. But there’s a lot to enjoy, especially when it comes to paying attention to detail, when it comes to Ray and Colin’s performances and recreating the nuances of old Hollywood filmmaking. (I wish they were experimenting more with aspect ratios, but I clearly love that kind of thing personally.)
