X-Men ’97 Creator Beau DeMayo has some criticism about how the MCU is being treated Namor Johnny Storm.
DeMayo created the first season of Disney+ and Marvel’s X-Men ’97 show, which premiered in March 2024. At least two seasons are currently in work. However, DeMayo was fired as the show’s headwriter around the time the first season premiered.
What did Beau Demayo from X-Men ’97 say about Namor and Johnny Storm?
In X, DeMayo shared a statement that Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the MCU, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how his character differs from Chris Evans’ Human Torch in the Fantastic Four.
“He’s branded as this feminized, demonic care guy, but is he sexy these days? I don’t think so,” Quinn said. “This version of Johnny isn’t too ruthless with the feelings of others.”
Demayo said, “They pulled this soft sh along with Namor.”
They even pulled this soft shit on Namor. https://t.co/nokz6pewtt

DeMayo responded to many in the comments, saying, “(Namor) met as a traumatized child who threw tantrums against the black nation, not the king.”
Regarding Johnny Storm, DeMayo criticized the “modernization” of Marvel characters, saying “modernization is virtue/signaling pandaring.” In another comment, he said: “Marvel won’t (storytelling) anymore, because you don’t want to work with a company where you say, ‘Kevin is a celebrity, it’s a face and a job, but working for us will help your career.’ ”

If you want, there is a way to tell a truly compelling story about a white boy in Braggart who lacks empathy – and perhaps a small feminization – check and humble after he himself is treated like a product, and thereby transformed into a celebrity hero he is dealt with…

That requires storytelling, but Marvel doesn’t do that anymore. Because you don’t want to work with a company where you say, “Kevin is a celebrity, a face and a job, but working for us will help your career.”

Another way to see it – Emma Frost, one of the reasons why she was attracted to Namor, is like herself – he is a trivial thing. No one fucks Emma. You will ruin her coffee order, she will telepathically insert bad childhood memories into your heart to spend the rest of your life…
