DC and HBO’s The Penguin surprised viewers last year as they had a fantastic view that the 2022 The Batman sequel series grounded the rise of Oswald Cobb’s power. The second season doesn’t look like a certain thing people have been expecting after its critical and commercial success, but the Penguin Season 1 4K release allows fans to taste all eight episodes of its incredible quality.
“The DC Studio drama Penguin starring Colin Farrell in the title role continues the epic crime story of Batman, with filmmaker Matt Reeves starting with the global blockbuster of Warner Bros Pictures, bringing centers to the characters played by Farrell in the film,” the official description says.
Beyond the stigma of comic book adaptation, Penguin is, frankly, just a great crime drama. That’s really amazing. Because it’s a detailed character study at its core, with a great actor who is dedicated to him, even under the prosthetic layer. The incredible performances of Farrell and Milioti (playing the psychotic version of Sofia Falcone) highlight every episode. It stands as a sequel to Batman, but it’s easy to wonder where the caped crusades lie between all of this, but it doesn’t depend on it as it can stand on its own as a closely written and rewarding drama.
The Penguin 4K release makes the most of its UHD as it is a great HDR grade. Gotham looks really stunning as you can see the belly of criminals in the city. I can really appreciate the title character’s makeup and the amazing details that came into the prosthetics. It was really fun watching the show on stream, but after watching all 8 episodes in 4K, I’m even more grateful. Audio also holds the end of the bargain as Dolby Atmos tracks really enrich the experience.
Penguin Season 1 4K has a fair amount of bonus content, but I’ve seen it pretty much before. Each episode goes behind the scenes (each episode released on YouTube) has a view of the key moments. There will also be an additional dish for about 40 minutes, from Sophia Falcone to the depiction of Gotham. They’re very fun to watch when you go together (the first disc has a trio of non-spoilers, while the third disc has six retrospective long stories apart from the inner Gotham episode. I loved the commentary tracks for a few episodes, but there are already plenty here so I can’t complain.
Penguin Season 1 4K Review: Final Verdict
Penguins are my favorite superhero shows made over the last decade and will hold a spot in the hearts of fans for a long time, even if this is the only season we’ve got. Colin Farrell’s award-winning performance is outstanding, but Cristin Milioti offers a breakout performance worthy of her own spinoff. As a result, Penguin Season 1 4K is a simple recommendation for Batman and DC fans.
