Before going to the show on Wednesday night, there was already a pretty clear sense of what the season premiere would premake. Everyone lives with John Mulany This first episode template was born, with the theme of “Money for People Who Lendered” Everyone is in Los Angelesa six-episode talk show experiment with Netflix’s John Mulaney from May 2024.
Combine the robot with the seimo in a range of eclectic ranges, occasional sketches, Richard types, and architecturally dynamic sets to make sure John has a clipboard. Throwing several calls from viewers and presenting the opening sequence featuring Prince’s “Live and Die in LA,” you have a great time of entertainment yourself.
Why did you make this first episode? Everyone’s live What was very exciting was how much I felt really not scripted. Take the introduction interview segment of guest/folk icon Joan Baez. This begins with Mulany asking her about her memories of Martin Luther King Jr., and before answering the questions, he asks Mulany to confirm that he has enthusiastically agreed that “I can say anything I want here.”
She then took advantage of the opportunity to point out what so many people have been thinking these days. It’s absolutely odd that the oligarchs pretend not to be torn apart in this country now. It was almost acknowledging the current events, and the audience reacted enthusiastically… and with it from her chest, she began to reveal that she had once been in the car, listening to the stories of Dr. King and his friends. She refused to reveal what King herself said.
The evening’s best achievement in comedian energy, turned to theatre child, came with Willie Roman focus group sketches. The death of a salesman Share character Willie Roman’s opinion on the world. The actors gathered included Anthony LaPaglia, Joe Cortez, Rob Moreau and Christopher Lloyd, two high school students. (Personal favourite moments, no special reason: everyone praises George C. Scott.)
The sketch also gave the show’s crew the necessary break to set up a classy performance of “hit to bong” spa, accompanied by a 14-piece orchestra. “Michael Keaton was the best fucking batman.” And then it was a good night’s time, with hair before the end of time.
Not all the bits featured in the first episode have landed completely, but that’s fine. (It’s possible that Mulaney and Tracy Morgan used a little more rehearsal time to nail Morgan’s appearance as “King Latifah.”) The only real problem was that four guests felt like there was just too much for the length of time they were served.
Mulaney was good at involving people, including one or two particularly smooth conversational moves to elicit Roy’s financial advice. But it would have been better to spend more time, especially Keaton, and with games with great stories and charismatic forces. And every second the camera spent at Baez, it was abundant and included her dance during the Cypress Hill closed performance.

The call-in segment certainly remains chaotic, keeping mulanie and guests on their toes, really highlighting the energy that comes with live television. Mulanie often showed genuine compassion with people talking about the difficult financial situation they were in, but there was still a bit of an edge to some of his reactions – like a lack of sympathy for the caller when it turns out she’d lent someone $10,000 to make a podcast.
The kindness in particular was fun on the phone and wasn’t afraid to share some dull truths (“investment” was his advice to women on the podcast). But everyone was giving genuine sincere advice for the man who lives in his van. Mulani also uses “What kind of car do you drive?” Questions as a gentle way to tell callers that you’ve spoken to them work very well on at least two levels. It’s more subtle than saying, “And… we’re out of hours!” Also, no matter how annoyed he is or finds a caller, he is always legally interested in their answers.
Because beyond his fast wit and ability to create callbacks from thin air, Mulani shines as a host by cultivating true curiosity. It contributed to a welcoming environment that truly empathizes with the meaning of the word “host” across multiple contexts.
As Baez said, starting a talk show in an age where “our democracy is on fire” certainly feels like a challenge. But by creating a space that does not ignore the outside world, but still allows for honest joy, Everyone’s live It feels like a truly special opportunity to take a big swing with Netflix money. Making this show is probably much cheaper than stunts like the Jake Paul/Mike Tyson fight. And it is infinitely superior to our souls.
